Statistics related to parasailing accidents, injuries and deaths are difficult to confirm.
One report estimates that between 1980 and 2010, at least 325 people were injured or killed while parasailing.
In that 30-year period, about 15 deaths related to parasailing are estimated to have taken place in Florida.
Although the U.S. Coast Guard has recommended adoption of safety procedures and guidelines, parasailing remains unregulated by the federal government.

Florida’s sparkling beaches offer residents and visitors a great venue for all sorts of water sports and related pastimes. One popular activity is parasailing. The non-profit Parasail Safety Council reports that as many as five million people experience the freedom and fun of parasailing every year in the U.S. The sport involves an individual’s being attached to a parachute and then towed behind a boat or other vehicle. The rider has no ability to steer the parasail.
As a personal injury and wrongful death attorney with years of acclaimed service to the people of Boca Raton, Naples, West Palm Beach and other South Florida communities, Gregg Hollander has seen tourists and Floridians injured in parasailing accidents in South Florida. If you’ve been hurt while parasailing, the Hollander Law Firm can help – just as we’ve assisted the victims of all sorts of accidents: motor vehicle crashes, medical malpractice events, premises liability situations and more.
Parasailing is not a sport that is formally regulated at any level – county, state, or federal. Some localities have issued rules to dictate when and where parasailing may be done, but mandates as to the training of those operating parasailing ventures or specifications as to the equipment used are generally lacking.
His experience representing accident victims has taught Attorney Gregg Hollander how quickly unanticipated accidents can occur – and how serious the consequences can be when unsuspecting individuals sustain serious injuries. In parasailing accidents, injuries can occur in any number of ways, such as:
- Falls, sometimes from great heights
- Failures of harnesses
- Failures of parachutes
- Mechanical failure of winches
- Mechanical failure of boats or other towing vehicles
- Impacts with buildings or other objects
